August Update: Mid-Year Impact Report

Our Collective Impact

In light of this extraordinary year, we’ve put together a Mid-Year Impact Report as a thank you to our committed community of supporters. While we usually wait until later in the year to reflect on our work, 2024 has been busier than ever—and shows no sign of slowing down as we head toward an election that could have serious repercussions for the scientific community and the entire world.

During the first half of 2024, we worked with a record number of researchers facing legal issues including censorship, legal attacks, intimidation, and climate misinformation. We have also helped an increasing number of scientists who are interested in participating in political campaigns and other forms of advocacy learn how to do so safely and effectively.

The prospect of another anti-science, climate-denying administration has made it more urgent than ever to continue our work. This includes fighting for stronger protections for federal scientists, ensuring that we have the legal resources to help the increasing number of climate scientists seeking advice or representation, and providing educational resources and training on topics related to scientific advocacy and activism.

Check out our 2024 Mid-Year Impact Report for a complete look at what we’ve accomplished so far this year with your support, plus what we have planned for the rest of 2024 and how you can be part of the fight. Your support powers our work, and we can’t do this without you.

Summer Match Update

In response to the potentially cataclysmic consequences of another anti-science administration, our generous donors have rallied and added another $3k to the matching pool, meaning all donations up to $43k will now be matched.

If you have already given in support of our mission, thank you! If you’re still thinking about supporting our work, don’t wait—our Summer Match campaign ends soon. Don’t miss your chance to have your gift go 2X further in support of climate science and scientists.

Memo to the Supreme Court: Clean Air Act Targeted CO2 as Climate Pollutant, Study Says

Inside Climate News | August 2, 2024

Naomi Oreskes, CSLDF Board member and Harvard University History of Science Professor, is the lead author of a new study recently published in Ecology Law Quarterly. The study seeks to establish definitively that lawmakers knew scientists considered carbon dioxide to be an air pollutant as far back as 1970. According to Michael Oppenheimer, CSLDF Board member and Princeton University Professor of Geosciences and International Affairs, the new study could play a critical role in environmental cases that come before the Supreme Court.
