AGU Fall Meeting 2024: Promoting Science by Serving as an Expert Witness

December 13, 2024 | 1:40PM – 5:30PM | Hall B-C (Poster Hall) (Convention Center)

As a national surge of civil lawsuits involving oil and gas corporations work through the American court system, scientists and their research will serve as a critical resource for both juries and the judiciary. Without question, the steadily advancing field of climate attribution research has important implications for climate litigation. The attorneys at Climate Science Legal Defense Fund will provide tips on how to minimize risk both professionally and personally when conducting research in a developing area of law, as well as the benefits and risks of serving as an expert witness. We will touch upon various types of consulting duties associated with expert witness work, how to communicate science effectively to lay audiences, and where and how scientists can have the most impact in climate litigation going forward.
