New Scientist Story: Maria Caffrey

Our Scientists’ Stories are profiles of scientists who have been targeted for political and ideological reasons.

Maria Caffrey is a climate scientist who was forced to defend years of her research from concerted censorship efforts by several senior officials at the National Park Service. Her story speaks to how easily government censorship can undermine sound and objective science, and the need for stronger protections for federal science. Regrettably, her whistleblower complaint remains unresolved more than 2 years after filing, but CSLDF is proud to be the organization helping her navigate this ongoing legal process. “No scientist should be forced to make the decision between their career and speaking the truth. I am so grateful that CSLDF exists for any other scientists that are put in this position in the future,” said Dr. Caffrey.

A recent Nature article referenced our Silencing Science Tracker we developed with the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School, and quoted CSLDF staff attorney Augusta Wilson. Wilson urged “agencies to adopt strong, explicit protections against censorship and other interference with scientists’ ability to communicate about their work.”
