Ways Scientists Can Speak Up for Science

Join us for an online workshop, Ways Scientists Can Speak Up for Science, during the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting. The GSA Geology and Society Division is co-hosting this event.

Scientists from all disciplines are increasingly looking for ways to make their voices heard. Some of the common activities researchers engage in include interacting with policymakers, pushing back against attacks on science, writing op-eds and open letters, and participating in the legal process by serving as an expert witness.

In this informal workshop, Climate Science Legal Defense Fund attorney Augusta Wilson will discuss these and other ways scientists can get involved in science advocacy, communication, and political engagement.

She’ll also talk about what both public sector and federally funded researchers should be mindful of when participating in these activities, so they can avoid encountering problems or legal issues.

Topics we’ll discuss include:

• How to exercise your First Amendment rights—and limitations on these
• How anti-lobbying laws and the Hatch Act apply to scientist-advocates
• How to participate in the legal process by serving as an expert witness
• What to know about writing and signing open letters and petitions

The first part of the workshop will feature a presentation. The second half is devoted to Q&A, though audience participation is encouraged throughout. The workshop is open to all GSA registrants.
