December Update: How Congress Abuses Its Power Over Science
How the Abuse of Congressional Oversight Powers Harms Science
Our new report, “How the Abuse of Congressional Oversight Powers Harms Science,” details the damaging ways Congress has abused its power over science. Such actions distract from Congress’s crucial pro-science endeavors, contribute to false narratives about climate science, public health and other critical fields, and endanger scientists.
To ensure that Congress’s future work is done within a framework that protects science, we also provide recommendations on how to defend against the abuse of congressional oversight powers. Download the report for free and learn more about it on our blog.
Scientists who want to help reform Congress should check out our guide to election-related political activities and our guide to Congressional advocacy.
Science and the First Amendment at #AGU20
Calling all American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting attendees! Join us for a live event on Tuesday, December 15 (tomorrow!) from 9–10 a.m. ET about how First Amendment protections apply to scientific research. Led by our own Augusta Wilson and American Civil Liberties Union attorney Arianna Demas, the session will cover how First Amendment rights have been used to protect free speech on university campuses, the rights of scientists to engage in political speech, and public protest rights for scientific and other demonstrations.
We’re Providing Free Legal Consultations to #AGU20 Attendees
If you’re a scientist in need of help with a legal issue related to your research, sign up for a free consultation with one of our attorneys during the meeting or afterward. Write to lawyer@csldf.org to make an appointment. Meeting are held over Zoom or on the phone.
In case you missed it: Maria Caffrey, a climate scientist, whistleblower, and one of our pro bono clients, wrote about what the Biden administration can do to ensure that scientists and their work are protected over the next four years and beyond.
Please help us protect science. A gift of any size supports the crucial free legal aid and educational resources we provide the scientific community. Donate today.
